Hi Andrew,
Likely not.......dissimilar hardware will be your downfall more
times than not. If the disk controller will be the same (use and
add-on controller and move it over along with the disks) you may
have a fighting chance.
The easiest way would be to virtualize your SBS2008, via VMWare,
which will allow you to move your virtual machine(VM) to any hard-
ware and it'll be fully functional in minutes. Don't activate the
software until it gets to the "home" system due to the fact if you
have a major hardware change with any recent Microsoft OS, it'll
want you to reactivate. Just save yourself so time and activate once
its at its final resting place.
Not sure what procedure you're talking about when you say "I could
transfer everything over". Had you planned to make a GHOST/Acronis
image?? Like I mentioned above, you may have a good chance if you
use an add-in disk controller and move the drives over also. Since I
would never recommend using an on-board controller for a server, due
to the fact that if the motherboard goes south in a year or two you
probably will have blue-screen issues because the disk controller
will now be different. You can always find disk controllers but it
may be harder finding an older motherboard with the disk controller
you originally had. (unless of course you'll be using standard IDE
or SATA drives which many high-end named brand servers don't).
Is you new Dell server a SCSI, SATA, etc system??
good luck

Hey All,
I am having a problem with Dell. We ordered a Server from them three weeks ago, and I go an email today saying that the order is delayed again. At this rate I will be a month from the order date that is comes it.
Is anybody else having orders delayed from Dell?
The real question is this. If I setup a trial edition of Windows
2k8 on a temp server, could I transfer everything over to the dell server once it comes in? I have read a technet article about transferring to different hardware, but I am not sure about transitioning from the trial edition to an OEM edition. Anybody tried this before. I really need to get this system setup for my client. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
