[sdw2003] Missing / screwed-up network interfaces

I have several virtual machines on a VMware ESXi server. It was running
ESXi 3.5U5 and everything worked. I upgraded it to 4.0.0U1, upgraded
the virtual hardware on all VMs, and installed the new VMware Tools.
Most VMs are working just fine. One W2K3 SP2 VM, though, is not.
It detected two new Ethernet interfaces, #3 and #4 Even with all config
correct, they cannot see anything else on the network. I uninstalled
them and rebooted, and #5 and #6 were detected. I went to configure
one, and got an error that it's IP was already in use by #2... but #2
does not show up anywhere that I can find.
I'm guessing that something, maybe in the Registry, still thinks that #1
and #2 are supposed to be working, so any others it detects just aren't
going to go.
Where could this be? Is there some way to absolutely, completely remove
every trace of every network interface, period, no exceptions, no
whoops-we-won't-touch-this-setting, so I can reboot and have the OS
detect the only two interfaces in the machine?
